Transport Hygiene

Clean is not an opinion. Clean is a standard.

International standards for the professional cleaning, inspection and certification of tanks, silos, tank containers, IBCs and other transport units — for food, feed and chemicals.

Why

Every contamination is a production risk.

Raw materials travel worldwide from primary production to the finished product. For chemicals, product quality and dangerous goods safety come first; for food and feed it is hygiene and the prevention of cross-contamination.

Health risk

Salmonella, listeria, viruses, mycotoxins, allergens or plastic granulate can cause significant harm to consumers.

Recall cost

A product recall quickly runs into millions — and damages the brand long-term.

Liability

When transporting food or feed, logistics and transport companies are FBOs and remain responsible for the cleaning result — even when it is outsourced.

Missing definition

"Visual check through the manhole with no visible soiling" is not a robust definition of cleanliness.

Standard

ENFIT Cleaning Codes — sixteen defined programmes.

Developed by the ENFIT working group, the programmes follow the physical state, viscosity, fat and protein content as well as allergen or GMO status. Both high-pressure cleaning without recirculation and CIP cleaning with recirculation are covered.

Selection depends primarily on the previous load as well as the technical data of the container: tank material, number of chambers, internals, number of manholes.

Process

Clean. Verify. Prove.

A transport container is more than its chamber. It consists of numerous fittings — venting lines, manhole covers, seals, hoses, bottom valves, filters, pressure fittings, pipe distributors and baffles.

01

Order & check-in

Digital order capture, identification of driver, container and owner via the GID.

02

Previous load & programme

Selection of the matching ENFIT cleaning programme based on the previous load and the container's technical data.

03

Cleaning

Execution to defined cycle times, temperatures and cleaning media — including every fitting and accessory.

04

Hygiene control

Verification of the cleaning result with validated methods, for example the CleanCard PRO hygiene indicator test.

05

Documentation

Issuing the ECC-ENFIT Cleaning Certificate with net cleaning time, programme and test result.

06

Sealing & release

Digital security seals with seal plan, scanned and secured in the blockchain.

Cleaning control

The cleaning result must be verified after every cycle using suitable measuring methods — the tank and dome as well as fittings, pipes, valves, hoses and pressure relief valves. ENFIT recommends the validated CleanCard PRO hygiene indicator test to its members.

Certification

HQF, ECC and DIN 10 502-1.

HQF certification qualifies the cleaning station. The ECC documents the individual cleaning. DIN 10 502-1 verifies the suitability of the container.

HQF

ENFIT HQF Certification

Three stages: questionnaire, technical inspection, staff training. Carried out by authorised and specially trained auditors. Only HQF-certified stations may issue the ECC.

Suitability test for transport containers

Initial and periodic testing of food transport containers: materials, design features, assessment of suitability, marking, proof of use and identification.

GREEN CLEANING

ENFIT Certified Green Cleaning

Ecological energy audit within the framework of the European Green Deal. The result is documented as an evaluation matrix and printed on the ECC.

  • Steam and heating water generator with heat recovery
  • High-pressure pumps with optimised delivery capacity
  • Pressure-side heat exchanger
  • Heat recovery from waste water
  • Hot water preheating with condensate return
  • Own energy supply: solar, wind, photovoltaics
  • Use of energy-optimised ENFIT cleaning programmes
ECC

ECC-ENFIT Cleaning Certificate

Registered certification mark (reg. no. 018296449, EUIPO). Issued exclusively by ENFIT-authorised cleaning facilities and secured in the blockchain.

Eight security features

  • Authenticity check via blockchain and QR code
  • Specific performance logo (chemicals, food, feed, kosher, halal)
  • Blockchain-secured business premises and certificate number
  • Cleaning codes and digitally transferred previous products
  • Grid lines as tamper protection
  • Digital security seal field
  • Link to the cleaning processes used
  • Transparent net cleaning duration

Why not the classic ECD?

  • As a printed paper form it can be reprinted or forged at any time
  • Business premises and serial number are not forgery-proof
  • Date, duration or container data can be edited afterwards
  • Seal IDs are entered manually and often assumed to run consecutively
  • Only check-in/check-out times instead of real cleaning duration
  • The driver confirms details they are not even allowed to observe

Digital

GID, digital twin and blockchain 5.0.

Together with its digitisation partner bulkvision GmbH (Hamburg), ENFIT operates a blockchain cloud technology for seamless traceability. Every process step is captured tamper-free and in real time — upstream and downstream.

ENFIT-GID — Global ITEM-ID

ENFIT is the first authorised, globally active non-profit organisation to develop a GID standard for identifying transport units. The GID label is made of high-pressure and acid-resistant plastic and designed as a permanent sticker. ENFIT generates and manages the non-overlapping ID numbers.

  • Digital check-in and check-out
  • Error-free identification of the transport unit
  • Worldwide tracking via POI
  • Inbound and outbound checklists on smartphone or tablet
  • Recurring inspections directly on the digital twin
  • Digital transfer of shipping documents and safety data sheets

Content of the digital certificate

  • Who cleaned when, where and to which standard?
  • Cleaning station details
  • Place, date, start and end time
  • GID of the cleaned transport unit
  • Owner data
  • Cleaning procedure and special procedures (allergen, GMO, kosher, halal)
  • Net cleaning duration
  • Result of the hygiene test

Role-based data access

Every company receives only the data it needs for safety and transparency — as owner, loader, unloader, carrier, cleaning station, depot, repair or inspection provider.

Food Defense

Protecting critical infrastructure.

Food defense is the protection of food against intentional adulteration with biological, chemical, physical or radiological substances. Together with the BVLK, ENFIT identified gaps in the supply chain and formulated requirements.

The same protection applies to feed (feed defense), ADR dangerous goods (chemical defense) and reusable packaging.

Typical mistakes when sealing

  • Seals are not applied correctly — openings remain partly accessible
  • The number of seals does not match the positions to be secured
  • Unsuitable securing systems such as eye bolts
  • Faulty transmission of seal IDs
  • Seals applied by the driver instead of the station or loading point

ENFIT food defense requirements

  • Synchronised securing and organisational procedures
  • Training in industry, logistics and cleaning stations
  • Guide and certificate for trainers
  • Defined responsibility for control measures
  • Digital entry and exit controls
  • Digital personal identification
  • Tested transport containers per DIN 10 502-1
  • Digital, blockchain-protected seals
